Georgetown County Airport

The Gateway to a Thriving Community

Flying high as a new year begins

Georgetown County Airport, a general aviation hub and the gateway to a dynamic region, traces its roots back to 1944 when it opened its gates as a marine air station. In those early days, it stood as a steadfast sentinel, proudly serving the military and United States. Today, its mission has evolved, yet its commitment to service remains steady. Georgetown County Airport is a lifeline for the community, businesses, destination travelers, and first responders.

Over the years, Georgetown County Airport has undergone significant transformations, adapting to the region’s changing needs. Innovation projects have recently been completed, each aimed to enhance the airport experience and set new standards. Jim Taylor, Airport Director, discusses the transportation hub’s developments and prospects, offering valuable insight into its focal role in regional connectivity and economic growth.

Strategic Geographical Positioning

At first glance, Georgetown County Airport may seem like just another small-scale facility, catering primarily to private aviation enthusiasts and occasional charter flights. However, a closer examination reveals a hidden gem—a vital infrastructure capable of driving advancement and economic well-being across the surrounding region.

Situated near major urban centers such as Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the airport attracts diverse visitors, from business travelers to tourists eager to explore the countryside’s natural beauty. The airport, primarily serving as a General Aviation (GA) facility, has historically been a favored destination for travelers nationwide, particularly those with vacation homes in the area.

Recent years have witnessed a surge in business activity, with an influx of new businesses and increased utilization by corporate entities. This increasing demand necessitated a proactive approach towards infrastructure development, particularly in hangar space.

Aircraft Storage Facilities

Presenting advanced facilities, the airport boasts three 10-bay nested T-hangars with electric bi-fold doors, offering easy access for aircraft owners. An additional 10-bay nested T-hangar with one box hangar attached is also available, featuring manually operated sliding doors ranging from 40′ to 44′ in size. These state-of-the-art hangars provide a secure and weather-protected environment for aircraft storage, ensuring optimal conditions for aviation needs.

The airport also presents two expansive corporate hangars for corporate aircraft owners seeking storage facilities, each possessing 12,000 square feet of usable space. These hangars provide ample room for 5-7 corporate aircraft and feature advanced ventilation systems with dual fans, ensuring continuous air circulation and optimal maintenance conditions. Intentionally positioned to direct airflow away from stored aircraft, these fans enhance safety and efficiency.

Partnerships for Hangar Expansion

Georgetown County Council recently greenlit a comprehensive business plan designed to catapult Georgetown County Airport to the forefront of general aviation along the South Carolina coast within the next four years. A critical aspect of this plan involves addressing the pressing need for hangar space. Taylor highlights the county’s active measures: “The county has stepped up to the plate before my arrival at Georgetown, and they’ve kept up with the demand by building additional hangar space.”

The blueprint extends beyond runway enhancements to encompass an ambitious initiative for hangar expansion. Collaborations with private entities have already yielded state-of-the-art hangar facilities tailored to accommodate a diverse range of aircraft.

Taylor also mentions ongoing efforts with an upstate group to plan a larger 30 to 40,000-square-foot hangar, specifically for corporate jet traffic and aircraft like King Airs. This commitment reflects the airport’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the aviation industry and ensuring that its infrastructure remains at the forefront of innovation and functionality.

Securing funding for these infrastructure improvements requires collaboration, with investments from federal, state, and county levels being crucial. The FAA’s pledge to cover 90% of the costs emphasizes the importance of these enhancements. Additionally, the airport’s plan underlines achieving self-sustainability within the next five years, leveraging increased revenues and business development opportunities.

This complex approach aims to harness the airport’s strategic location and expansive 680-acre property to attract aviation and aerospace companies, stimulating economic growth and regional investment. Georgetown’s geographical positioning, equidistant from bustling hubs like Charleston and Myrtle Beach, further highlights its potential as a thriving aviation hub.

While congestion and limited expansion opportunities plague neighboring airports, Georgetown County Airport features vast land earmarked for future growth and development. With meticulous planning and a forward-thinking approach, the airport envisions using its 645-acre expanse to accommodate the evolving needs of the aviation industry and foster sustained economic growth.

Beyond infrastructural enhancements, the airport remains committed to implementing operational upgrades to enhance safety, efficiency, and passenger experience. From runway modernization initiatives to terminal upgrades, Georgetown County Airport is poised to elevate its operational standards to meet the demands of an increasingly discerning clientele. Integrating larger hangar facilities is just one aspect of the airport’s comprehensive strategy to remain competitive and adaptable in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.

Nurturing the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals

Taking a proactive approach, the airport’s initiatives go beyond infrastructure and economic development. They encompass comprehensive strategies to address industry-wide challenges such as the pilot shortage and the growing demand for skilled aviation professionals.

The partnership between Georgetown County Airport and CHS Flight School has been instrumental in providing aspiring pilots with accessible and comprehensive training opportunities.

Established three years ago, CHS Flight School’s presence at the airport has not only addressed the need for skilled aviation professionals but has also spurred further expansion of training operations. This collaborative effort underscores the airport’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of aviation professionals and meeting the industry’s evolving demands.

This initiative kickstarted efforts to provide accessible and comprehensive flight training opportunities in the region, with ongoing plans to expand training operations further to meet the growing demand for trained pilots.

Leveraging Educational Partnerships

The airport’s proximity to educational institutions like Georgetown Technical College presents a unique opportunity to foster partnerships to develop aviation programs tailored to industry demands. Discussions with the college administration highlight a shared vision to establish aviation programs, encompassing pilot training and aircraft maintenance, to equip students with the skills necessary to excel in the aviation sector.

The potential collaboration with the Pittsburgh Institute of Aviation (PIA) further underscores the airport’s commitment to providing holistic training solutions for aspiring aviation professionals. By leveraging existing partnerships and establishing new avenues for collaboration, Georgetown County Airport aims to position itself as a premier destination for aviation education and training.

The synergy between the airport and emerging aviation businesses, such as Sherpa’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, further enriches the training landscape by offering apprenticeship programs and hands-on learning opportunities. This symbiotic relationship addresses the industry’s demand for skilled technicians and fosters a dynamic ecosystem where education and industry converge to drive innovation and excellence.

A Lifelong Passion for Aviation

Georgetown County Airport owes much of its ongoing success to individuals like Taylor, whose dedication to the airport and its mission is undeniable. Taylor’s connection to aviation, inherited from his father’s lifelong passion, tells his story from a budding enthusiast to a seasoned aviation manager, embodying the resilience and purpose essential for navigating the industry’s complexities.

His dedication extends beyond professional obligations, resonating with a deeply personal ethos defining his airport management approach. With every sunrise, Taylor’s enthusiasm for his role as an airport steward fuels his determination to make each day count, seize every opportunity, and leave a legacy for future generations. ‘Every day is a new opportunity; you see something new every day,’ Jim reflects, encapsulating his optimism and practical approach to navigating challenges and opportunities.
