Business View Magazine interviews Wayne Cao, CEO of Golden Cabinets and Stone, for our focus on Manufacturing & Distribution

Golden Cabinets and Stone has supplied top quality prefabricated cabinets, stone countertops, flooring, and tiles to Hawaii’s residential construction sector since their establishment in 2007. Formed to provide a reliable, competitively priced supplier to builders and renovators across the state, the business has since amassed huge warehouse capabilities and carved out a reputation as Hawaii’s largest inventory supplier of its kind.

Golden Cabinets and Stone supplies an extensive variety of cabinets, countertops, sinks, vinyl flooring, tiles, shower doors, and stone shower panels sourced from quality overseas partners. Cabinets are available in solid wood (11 designs to choose from), acrylic gloss (Glossy White, Wood Grey, and Modern Grey), and alternating vanity designs. The company boasts 28 sink designs, 43 countertops available in granite and quartz, premium 5mm vinyl flooring with soundproof underlay, tiles available in porcelain, wood, flagstone, travertine, marble, and slate, five unique stone shower panel designs, 6 sliding shower door models, and free design services – everything clients need to support the renovation of their dreams.

CEO Wayne Cao shares his vision for Golden Cabinets and Stone. “I have a background in home renovations. I spent many years working with my father on jobs throughout the state, and we always struggled to find reliable partners to supply us with the level of variety that we needed, within the timeframes that were required for our sites. There was a definite gap in the local market for a supplier that could service Hawaii’s construction sector in a timely, efficient manner, so I thought, why not? And we have seen great success since then. We now have the largest held stock in the state.”

The team of 50 at Golden Cabinets and Stone operates from a single 70,000 square-foot warehouse location in Honolulu, HI. The location regularly houses over 80,000 prefabricated cabinets and 5,000 pieces of countertop stock; clients are welcome on site to view product samples and choose stock according to their specifications. Mr. Cao explains that building a varied network of professional relationships has been a focus for management since the company’s founding. “In our industry, you don’t get very far without a really solid network. We began as a family business, so our values are aligned with that. We reward our staff for their hard work, diligence, and flexibility, and always keep up with any concerns or ideas communicated to us by our clients, suppliers, and business partners. We operate largely on a referrals basis – Golden Cabinets and Stone has a great reputation for our attentiveness, communication, and our willingness to work towards client goals. Golden Cabinets and Stone has taken first place in their category in the annual Hawaii’s Best awards, hosted by Honolulu Star-Advertiser, for the last six years. Honolulu Star-Advertiser was formed in 2010 with the combination of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser; taking on over a century of history to create Hawaii’s largest news-assembling organization. The newspaper is available in digital and print and reaches thousands of readers across the state every day. Mr. Cao shares, “I love seeing our company recognized publicly like this. We won our category for 2016 through to 2021, and I am hopeful for our chances in 2022. It’s wonderful to be able to reference such a long history with these awards to support our reputation.”

Golden Cabinets and Stone are also members of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA Hawaii), Hawaii’s peak industry body for the support of developers, general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers, realtors, architects, financial institutions, and building professionals. BIA Hawaii was founded in 1955 to provide members with unique opportunities to network across sectors, attend community-wide events, address industry challenges, and develop professionally through education and community outreach programs.

The organization is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in advocating for builders across the construction industry, identifying their mission as: “Together we ensure competitiveness and growth of the construction industry in Hawaii.” Mr. Cao shares, “The support of industry groups like BIA Hawaii means a lot to us. We feel seen, heard, and spoken and cared for. BIA Hawaii makes sure we are able to operate safely, and they work very hard to keep our whole industry moving forward with new technologies. We really value our membership with them.”

Moving forward, Golden Cabinets and Stone hope to further develop their relationships with overseas suppliers to allow for an even more varied range of cabinets and countertops and increase design capabilities for special custom orders. Mr. Cao elaborates, “Something we are currently working on is expanding our ability to service custom-made orders for cabinets and countertops. Our biggest differentiators in our market are our sheer number of stock and the range that we provide. We are committed to allowing our customers the most freedom of choice possible, so we want to also support those discerning customers that want to design their own product or have us design it for them according to their specifications. This will expand our customer base even further, and if we want to move into more interstate work in the long-term future, will set us up for continued success.”
