Pioneering Precision in a Changing Industry

A leader in providing high-quality solutions for the mining industry

As the mining industry evolves and is characterized by rapid technological advancements and increasing demand for efficiency, Nutana Machine distinguishes itself through its precision machining and fabrication expertise in Saskatchewan. Founded in 1946, the company has adeptly navigated the changing landscape, becoming a leader in providing high-quality solutions primarily for the mining sector. With nearly eight decades of expertise, Nutana Machine combines its deep-rooted history with forward-thinking innovation to maintain its regional leadership position.

A legacy of adaptation

Nutana Machine’s journey began at a time far removed from today’s advanced technological landscape. “I joined the company in 1973 after gaining a degree in mechanical engineering,” Don Galbraith, President, shares. His experience in oil and hard rock mining laid the groundwork for the company’s future growth. From its early days as a small  machine and welding shop, Nutana has developed a reputation for high-quality machining and fabrication, primarily serving the mining and mineral processing sectors.

“Our evolution is significant,” Galbraith, D. notes. “The company today does not resemble what it was when I started. We have transitioned from manual processes to state-of-the-art automated systems.”

A key driver of this transformation has been integrating computer animated drafting technologies. “Our 3D models provide the foundation for all our production processes,” Galbraith D. explains. “They enable us to design and fabricate components accurately, reducing errors and enhancing quality. This technology allows us to deliver complex projects on time and budget. Moving design and production to the digital realm increases efficiency and accuracy.”

Specialized services in the mining sector

Nutana’s core business revolves around providing specialized services to the mining industry. The company fabricates  equipment for potash, uranium, and  other mining operations, all requiring high precision and durability. “We pride ourselves on our ability to manufacture complex components that withstand extreme conditions,” Tod Galbraith, Managing Director, states. “For instance, our work in mining often involves creating custom underground equipment that can handle abrasive materials and  harsh operating environments.”

One of Nutana’s flagship products is its Mineveyors, which are extensible mobile conveyor systems attached to the mining machines  for potash extraction. These systems are essential for transporting mined materials efficiently. “We collaborate closely with our clients to design systems that fit their specific operational needs,” Ryan Poelzer, Production Manager, emphasizes. “This client-focused approach ensures that we deliver solutions that enhance productivity while addressing safety and operational challenges.”

The company has worked with international mining leaders, including those headquartered in Finland, to manufacture critical mineral processing components such as flotation cells and thickeners. These long-standing partnerships reflect Nutana’s ability to meet the demands of global clients while remaining grounded in its local community. This relationship has enabled Nutana to also deliver many flotation projects to international companies working in the Alberta Oilsands.

Nutana has also assisted their mining clients at the forefront of safety innovation in mining. The addition of technology to remotely control the mining machines and Nutana Mineveyors, showcases the company’s commitment to continuing support to their clients’ drive for automation to reduce risks for mine workers. “These systems allow operations to be controlled from the surface, keeping workers out of high-risk zones,” Galbraith, D. explains. “Safety is a top priority, and we are proud to contribute to our customers’ drive to creating safer workplaces.”

Stability through industry versatility

While Nutana’s primary focus is mining, the company has strategically diversified into other industries, including energy, agriculture, construction, and manufacturing. This diversification not only broadens Nutana’s expertise but also provides stability in the face of fluctuating commodity markets. “Diversification is key to our resilience,” Galbraith, T., notes. “When one sector experiences a downturn, we can rely on other industries to maintain steady operations.”

One of Nutana’s most notable products outside the mining sector involves manufacturing seed coating machinery for a client servicing the agriculture industry. “Our work in seed coating reflects our ability to adapt our precision engineering expertise to new and evolving markets,” Galbraith, T. explains. “It also highlights our commitment to supporting local and global agriculture.”

A recent project highlighting Nutana’s adaptability was the purchase of a collaborative welding robot (Cobot) to meet the increased volumes of repetitive parts from their clients. This advanced system dramatically increased efficiency and improved the work environment for employees by reducing repetitive manual labor. “The cobots allowed us to triple our output while enabling our team to focus on more complex tasks,” Poelzer shares.

Driving efficiency with automation

As the industry landscape evolves, Nutana’s approach to manufacturing adapts as well. Over the past five years, the company has made significant investments in automation, driven by both a commitment to innovation and the realities of labor shortages. “We focus on removing repetitive tasks through automation,” Poelzer notes. “For example, our robotic Beam Cut system has reduced manual labor significantly while improving precision and overall efficiency.”

Automation has become a cornerstone of Nutana’s operations, encompassing CNC machining and fabrication equipment, robotics, and cobots for welding. These technologies improve productivity and enhance the work environment for employees. “One example is a project where we fabricated 8,000 T-brackets,” Poelzer explains.

“Each bracket required six inches of weld in both directions. Using cobots, the operator could set them up, tack them, and let the cobot handle the repetitive welding work. It tripled daily output, and most importantly, the operator went home not tired. Improving the work environment for our employees is just as critical as increasing efficiency.”

Bridging workforce gaps

Recruiting skilled tradespeople remains one of Nutana’s significant challenges, as for many Canadian companies, but it’s not the only one. “It can be a challenge,” Galbraith, T., acknowledges. Nutana has strategically invested in a balance of technical expertise and advanced technologies to navigate, ensuring its operations thrive despite labor shortages. “Our ability to implement technologies like cobots and CNC robotics stems from the strength of our technical team, which includes engineers and technologists,” Galbraith, D. explains.

Focusing on a technical workforce enables Nutana to maximize efficiency and maintain high-quality standards. “We rely heavily on 3D modeling as the foundation for our projects,” Galbraith T. continues. “Whether it’s plates, beams, or tubing, our technical team processes these designs, ensuring that every detail is optimized for precision manufacturing.” The higher ratio of technical staff to shop workers has been a key factor in Nutana’s ability to integrate advanced systems, ensuring competitiveness despite skilled labor shortages.

The company has also developed software for estimating and project management, a system that has served them since the mid 1980s. “We’re now transitioning to a more modern ERP system flexible enough to adapt as our needs evolve,” Galbraith, D., shares. “It’s about ensuring access to the right information and tools to support efficiency and innovation.”

Collaboration and community engagement

Collaboration is integral to Nutana’s approach. The company actively works with local suppliers, manufacturers, and organizations like SIMSA (Saskatchewan Industrial and Mining Suppliers Association) to enhance its operations and contribute to the broader manufacturing ecosystem. “In a small market like Saskatoon, collaboration is essential,” Poelzer explains. “We work closely with our partners to ensure every project meets the highest quality standards and is delivered on time.”

Nutana’s collaborative approach extends to its clients as well. “Our goal is always project success for the customer,” Galbraith, D., notes. “Whether it means outsourcing certain components or working with multiple partners, we do whatever it takes to deliver on our promises.”

The company is pleased to actively support local charities and community organizations.

Engineering Project Management

Minimizing waste, maximizing impact

The mining industry, particularly potash mining, continues to undergo transformative changes driven by technological advancements. Nutana has been keen on supporting our clients’ drive toward these developments, delivering safety and efficiency solutions. “Our Mineveyor systems, for example, have evolved to minimize human presence in high-risk areas,” Galbraith, D., explains. “These systems can now be operated remotely, significantly reducing safety concerns.”

Sustainability has become a central focus for Nutana as industries worldwide strive to reduce their environmental impact. “We’re increasingly focused on sustainable manufacturing practices,” Poelzer states. “This includes minimizing waste, optimizing resource use, and developing products that support our clients’ sustainability goals.”

Nutana also takes a leadership role in advocating for sustainability within the mining sector. “We work closely with clients to help develop solutions that align with their environmental priorities,” Galbraith, D. notes. “It’s a shared responsibility, and we’re proud to contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Streamlining for success

Looking ahead, Nutana is poised for continued growth, guided by a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence. “We don’t pursue growth for its own sake; we expand only when demand warrants it,” Galbraith, D. explains. This pragmatic approach ensures the company remains agile, adapting to market conditions without compromising its core values.

Nutana’s ongoing investment in modern software systems further streamlines its operations and enhances collaboration with clients and suppliers. “Our transition to a new ERP system will enhance our commitment to continuous improvement, thereby adding value for our customers through improved efficiency, communication, and project management,” Galbraith, D. shares.

From leveraging cutting-edge technology to fostering a collaborative spirit, Nutana Machine sets the standard for precision manufacturing. With a strong foundation of expertise, innovation, and adaptability, the company is well-positioned to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
