Norwell’s District-Wide Core Support Strategy
While Norwell Public School’s strategy involves the holistic integration of many different developmental factors, its main focus is to deliver support.
“We focus on academic excellence and support to prepare students for life after high school… and we work in conjunction with the community to make that happen,” says Superintendent of Schools Matthew Keegan.
The district’s curriculum, while diverse, maintains a steady focus on college readiness, career planning, and equipping students with the skills to engage in a globalized world.
Perhaps the most practical part of Norwell’s strategic plan is that it introduces this focus to students early on in their education. It would be correct to say that much of the district’s success is due to its early childhood learning initiatives.
The initiative has been an absolute strategic cornerstone that leverages community engagement and support.
“Our town has a history of having local preschools that families go to for years, so we partner with them… we have an Early Childhood Coordinator in our district who observes and provides information and feedback to those community preschools,” explains the Director of Student Services, Ms. Suzan Theodorou.
Although the district doesn’t have a full-time public preschool, its early learning initiatives are fully embedded in the Norwell preschool network, bringing a unique class experience that emphasizes socialization and play, following directions, establishing routines, and developing interpersonal skills.
The district has equipped its elementary schools with reading, literacy, and math specialists who oversee most of the screening data and work with classroom teachers to analyze and act on the information they gather.
Going even further, the district also has strong social and emotional support systems to facilitate its emphasis on social-emotional learning.
“We make sure to have the right personnel to address the whole child. We have a psychologist at every building, a district social worker, a behavioral specialist, and in the last two years we’ve introduced an inclusion specialist,” Mr. Keegan explains.
Balancing Education, Technology, and Infrastructure
While extremely valuable, consistently creating such a comprehensive experience for students does not come without its challenges. However, the district has learned to leverage technology as a solution.
Every classroom is equipped with a smartboard. As students transition into kindergarten they are given access to iPads that they can access in school, and as they continue from grade 6 to 12, they are given iPads for at-home learning as well.
“We wanted to give students the ability to communicate with each other and to be able to replace many of their textbooks with technology,” explains Director of Finance, Operations, and Technology Mr. Warren McCallum.
While students certainly enjoy greater learning efficiency and access, the best benefit of the district’s focus on tech integration has to be the overall improvement in its ability to monitor student progress across a range of categories.
Programs like Panorama and SAEBERS (Social academic and emotional behavior risk screener) help teachers and district leaders alike to monitor the social-emotional well-being of their students. Additionally, Schoology, the district’s main learning management system, helps to communicate and monitor overall academic performance.
As students provide feedback, these programs help predict possible future obstacles, unique to the individual, that may need early intervention.
The result has been a drastically simplified and tailored experience where students have the support they need and teachers have the autonomy to provide that support at a moment’s notice.
And of course, Norwell’s push to integrate technology into its operation is just as holistic as its strategy as it has also made capital investments in district infrastructure to facilitate those efforts.
The district is currently in the process of renovating its entire Wi-Fi infrastructure to handle the added bandwidth. It’s added a multitude of internal cameras and buzz-in style security doors in its schools and also benefits from participation in a solar program that has granted incredible savings on district-wide energy expenses.
While the more physically oriented investments may seem irrelevant, having more technological integration both digitally and physically has resulted in the students’ greater acceptance and willingness to learn and engage with unfamiliar technology.
This shift in student perspective toward tech is just one example of the subtle factors driving Norwell’s academic success; it will greatly shape the learning environment of the new district high school currently being planned for.
Norwell is currently processing the benefits and challenges of AI upon education and its students. AI has the potential to elevate educational standards and transform classroom learning to an even larger degree than the advent of the scientific calculator.
The district’s secondary staff is already researching AI applications and developing internal guidelines to be integrated into future renditions of its strategic plan.
Students and Faculty Prepared for the Future
It is important to note that Norwell students perform well under the district strategy because as students progress, the curriculum becomes as rigorous as it is diverse.
Norwell Public School’s prides itself on providing a comprehensive curriculum for upper-grade students. The district’s status exemplifies this commitment to a robust academic foundation as an AP Scholar School for the past four years.
All students take four years of English, math, social studies, and science, and Norwell’s science curriculum even includes advanced courses such as biotechnology and medicinal chemistry.
Seniors have the opportunity to engage in internships with local businesses, gaining real-world experience in various fields.
These programs provide hands-on experiences, supported by resources from local families and businesses, ensuring students receive practical and relevant education in cutting-edge fields.
Norwell’s World Language Program provides students with the opportunity to reach a sixth level in Latin, French, and Spanish, as well as two levels of Arabic. This unique offering in the area enables students to achieve high proficiency and access numerous scholarships.
The district partners with Syracuse University to offer SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advance) courses, granting college language credits. This collaboration not only benefits students but also ensures that teachers are certified and follow a rigorous curriculum set by Syracuse University.
This highlights a key aspect of Norwell’s strategy that sheds some light on its stellar performance; simply put, the system was designed to support students and teachers.
Norwell addresses the nationwide teacher shortage with a strong induction and mentoring program. New teachers, whether novices or experienced veterans undergo a comprehensive orientation.
“Our induction program starts with two full days in the summer where we take all new staff members and acclimate them to the district,” says Director of Teaching, Learning, and Technology Ms. Diane Provenzano.
Each new teacher is paired with a mentor for three years, typically from their department, who provides ongoing support.
This robust program has contributed to the district’s low turnover rate and high teacher satisfaction, which Provenzano confirms, saying “We have a regular turnover rate between 5% and 6% due to retirement, but generally, people don’t leave.
This may have a lot to do with the fact that Norwell also supports its teachers through a Graduate Studies Program, reimbursing them for graduate courses and providing extensive professional development opportunities.
Looking ahead, Norwell is preparing to embark on a new five-year strategic plan with a group called the Teaching Learning Alliance. This initiative aims to incorporate emerging trends in education and ensure the district continues to provide high-quality, forward-thinking education.
