From Demolition to Development

Rebuilding Detroit from the Ground Up

Detroit’s renewal over the past two decades has created opportunities for companies that believe in the city’s potential and understand its communities. Among those leading the charge is DMC Group, a construction and development firm that has quietly become a trusted name across metro Detroit.

Founded in 2005, DMC Group has grown from a small contracting business into a multidisciplinary organization offering general contracting, development, demolition, and excavation services. The company’s steady growth reflects both its adaptability and its commitment to quality.

At the helm is Mike Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer, who established DMC Group with a vision to contribute to Detroit’s rebuilding efforts through reliable, community-focused work. “We started as a general contractor and then diversified as a developer and builder,” says Chaudhary M. “We are also providing demolition and excavation services now.”

Working alongside him is his son, Yash Chaudhary, Senior Project Manager, who has helped drive the company’s expansion and modernization. “Demolition is just one of our divisions,” explains Chaudhary Y. “We started as a general contractor and still operate as a construction manager on both commercial and residential projects. Our strength is in how our divisions work together to deliver results.”

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

For Chaudhary M., the company’s 20th anniversary is both a professional and personal achievement. “Our 20th anniversary means a lot to us,” he reflects. “We started as a general contractor and then diversified as a developer and builder. We are also providing demolition and excavation services now.”

To mark the milestone, DMC Group is hosting a celebratory event on December 12 to recognize the employees, subcontractors, suppliers, architects, and engineers who have supported the company over the years. “We are honoring all the people who have helped us to be where we are today,” says Chaudhary M. “This anniversary is as much about them as it is about us.”

Rebuilding Detroit

Detroit’s revitalization has provided a powerful backdrop for DMC Group’s work. The firm has become deeply involved in the city’s ongoing transformation, particularly through its demolition division, which plays a critical role in preparing land for redevelopment.

“Most of our demolition work is focused on residential structures,” explains Chaudhary M. “But we have also done schools and commercial buildings throughout the metro Detroit area. Our focus has been on rebuilding the city from the ground up.”

The company handles everything from sewer cut-offs to coordination with utility providers, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and responsibly. This practical expertise forms the foundation for DMC Group’s broader work in site utilities and land balancing, which bridges the gap between demolition and construction.

A Multi-Divisional Powerhouse

While many companies specialize in one niche, DMC Group’s versatility sets it apart. “Demolition is just one of our divisions,” clarifies Chaudhary Y. “We started as a general contractor and still operate as a general contractor and construction manager for both commercial and residential projects.”

Within the DMC Group, each division collaborates rather than operates in isolation. “We have cross-functional teams,” says Chaudhary Y. “Our demolition group also has a foot in the door on site utilities and land balancing. We also have a self-performance group that works on residential rehabs and small commercial projects, and our construction management team acts as a general contractor for government and private contracts.”

This integrated model allows the company to maintain agility and quality control, whether executing a large municipal project or restoring a historic property. “We always try to collaborate internally and externally through technology, partnerships, and contracting strategies tailored to the project and the client,” he adds. “That is what allows us to deliver successfully, even under tight timelines.”

Collaboration at the Core

The word “collaboration” is central to the DMC Group story. For Chaudhary M., it is not just a business strategy but a company philosophy. “Some of the partners we work with were once small startups,” he shares. “We supported them financially and guided them on company law, bonding, and insurance. Now they are independent and growing companies.”

These partnerships exemplify DMC Group’s community-first mindset. Local firms such as City Abatement Services, Zak Welding, Zervos Group, Guy Hurley Insurance, MANS Lumber, and 4545 Architecture have all played significant roles in the company’s success. “These are all Metro-Detroit-based firms that have grown alongside us,” adds Chaudhary Y. “We share training and workshops to reduce costs and improve efficiency. It is about growing together.”

Designing with Purpose

While DMC Group typically outsources architectural design to trusted partners, its in-house team remains deeply involved to ensure every project aligns with the neighborhood’s identity.

“We hire design firms,” explains Chaudhary M., “but we are very closely involved in ensuring sustainable designs that complement the block or city where the project is located.” This philosophy ensures that every DMC development, whether new construction or renovation, enhances the surrounding community rather than disrupting it.

Showcasing Detroit’s Heritage

Few projects exemplify DMC Group’s craftsmanship and commitment to heritage as vividly as the Hamtramck Stadium Restoration, a century-old baseball landmark.

“This was a historical renovation where we worked with the Smith Group, a nationwide architecture firm,” says Chaudhary Y. “We won two historical preservation awards for it, including the State of Michigan Governor’s Award for Historical Preservation.”

The project presented significant challenges. The stadium’s steel structure, nearly a hundred years old, required careful assessment and restoration. “We had to sandblast and clear the original steel, reinforce the structure, and make it safe for modern use,” explains Chaudhary Y. “It was awarded during COVID, so we had to navigate supply chain and labor challenges on top of everything else.”

The result is a triumph of engineering and community spirit, a once-abandoned landmark reborn as a gathering space for Detroit’s residents.

Affordable Housing and Urban Renewal

Another standout success is 70 Clairmount, an affordable housing development that showcases DMC Group’s ability to balance preservation and progress.

“We purchased the building, reconfigured the design, and led the construction in-house,” says Chaudhary Y. “The project earned the Spirit of Detroit Award for maintaining historical features while transforming the property into affordable housing.”

The building, more than fifty years old, faced significant damage during the pandemic. “We had to structurally reinforce it while preserving its original character,” he adds. “Now it is ready to serve the community for decades to come.”

The Gerald Development

Beyond Detroit, DMC Group has made its mark in Rochester Hills with a striking new development called the The Gerald.

“It is the tallest building in the jurisdiction,” says Chaudhary Y. “The project includes ten luxury condos atop six commercial units. It is an anchor development in Rochester Hills’ new downtown area.”

Acting as both developer and builder, DMC Group has created a mixed-use property that blends aesthetic sophistication with economic impact. “It is already on the market, and we are excited to see how it contributes to the city’s growth,” he adds. “It demonstrates that we can operate successfully in multiple markets while maintaining our quality and collaboration standards.”

Marketing Through Reputation and Results

DMC Group’s reputation for quality and integrity has been its most powerful marketing tool. While word of mouth remains invaluable, the company also embraces modern marketing approaches to showcase its work and attract top talent.

“Our strategy has three parts,” says Chaudhary Y. “First, we use social media and our website to highlight our projects and company culture. We want people to see not just the buildings we create but the people and values behind them.”

The second pillar is documentation. “We maintain high-definition visuals of every project so that our portfolio and client presentations reflect our standards,” he adds. “And finally, we engage directly with local universities to recruit new talent. Hiring locally keeps our teams connected to the communities we serve.”

Recognized for Excellence

Over the years, DMC Group has garnered numerous accolades recognizing both its growth and its commitment to safety and community.

“We have been fortunate to be recognized many times,” shares Chaudhary M. “We received the Construction Association of Michigan Safety Award in 2010, and we have been ranked several times by Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest-growing companies in the country.”

The company’s achievements also include being named one of the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch and earning multiple Inner City 100 awards, celebrating America’s fastest-growing urban businesses. “In 2024, we were inducted into the Inner City 100 Hall of Fame,” says Chaudhary M. “It is a reflection of our team’s dedication and hard work.”

Investing in the Next Generation of Trades

Looking ahead, DMC Group’s focus is as much on people as on projects.

“Our top priority is navigating the shifting market trends in public and private construction,” says Chaudhary Y. “We are also looking to expand through new development partnerships and potentially replicate our model out of state.”

Yet one challenge remains top of mind: the shortage of skilled trades.

“There is a massive shortage of skilled workers,” emphasizes Chaudhary M. “The older generation of tradespeople is retiring, and there is a gap in replacing those skills. We are working with local agencies and training programs to attract young talent, carpenters, welders, mechanics, roofers, and provide them with sustainable employment.”

The Vision for the Next 20 Years

As DMC Group enters its third decade, its mission remains rooted in the same principles that guided its founding: integrity, collaboration, and community impact.

“Every company is a work in progress,” reflects Chaudhary Y. “We are continuously reviewing and improving our processes as we grow. The next 20 years are about expanding our reach while staying true to who we are.”
