30 minutes with the executive director of the Cremation Association of North America
BUSINESS VIEW: Talk about the creation of the as-
sociation and some of the events that led to it?
BARBARA KEMMIS:
Dr. Hugo Erichson and other pio-
neers who brought cremation from Europe to the Unit-
ed States founded the Cremation Association of North
America in 1913. They were passionate about crema-
tion and established the earliest North American cre-
matories on cemetery property. Memorialization was
core to their beliefs and they created and promoted
creative ways to display cremation urns and properly
honor members of these cremation societies.
BUSINESS VIEW: In terms of the evolution since
then, as cremation has become a more frequently
chosen option, how have the association’s priorities
and offerings changed?
