BNSF deployed employees where they were needed
most to quickly return the rail line to safe operation.
Edward R. Hamberger, AAR’s president and CEO,
stressed the importance of research on new safety
systems.
“The sweeping reduction in freight rail accidents and
injuries over the last several decades is the result of
stepped-up employee training as well as the work of
a dedicated team of safety experts who conduct rigor-
ous research, examine problems in new ways, apply
technological advances and novel changes to process-
es that ultimately make a safe system of transporta-
tion even safer,” said Hamberger. “We are proud of the
industry’s efforts, including those highlighted in this
report, and look forward to promoting more develop-
ments in the future.”
The AAR believes that the State of the Industry Reports
will become a mainstay, a key vehicle to communicate
challenges and opportunities for the industry. The AAR
will issue multiple such reports each year, including
two more in 2016, with each individual report focusing
on a particular theme.
For more than 180 years, railroads have united a na-
tion, revolutionized transportation and catalyzed eco-
nomic development. That remains the same today.
The AAR and its members look forward to a successful
year.
