Learning Without Limits

The Ongoing Evolution of Education

Education is evolving rapidly, and school districts must adapt to new methodologies that ensure student success. The New Prairie United School Corporation’s approach is defined by a strong commitment to continuous improvement and collaborative learning.

Dr. Paul M. White, PhD, Superintendent of New Prairie United School Corporation, explains, “One of our core values is continuous improvement—constantly striving to improve every day. We have invested heavily in professional learning communities, where educators collaborate to determine the best ways to help students achieve their highest academic potential.”

This approach emphasizes real-time assessment and immediate intervention when students struggle with a subject. Dr. White elaborates, “Traditionally, students would learn a topic, take a test, and then move on regardless of their understanding. Our approach is different. We continuously monitor progress and provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding, ensuring no one is left behind.”

Another key value is a student-centered approach, moving away from the mindset that schools must operate as they always have. “We focus on what is best for the students, not what is most comfortable for the adults in the system,” Dr. White says. “This means we are willing to adapt our teaching methodologies to meet the needs of our learners.”

Implementing change before the pandemic

The district’s forward-thinking approach predates the COVID-19 pandemic. Their early adoption of professional learning communities positioned them to navigate the challenges of remote and hybrid learning more effectively than many other districts. “We started implementing this framework several years before COVID,” Dr. White says. “When the pandemic hit, we were better prepared to adjust and reduce learning gaps as we returned to consistent, in-person education.”

Recognition and awards

New Prairie United School Corporation’s innovative approach has garnered national recognition. One of the district’s most significant achievements came in 2023 when Rolling Prairie Elementary School—a school with the highest poverty rate in the district—was named a National Blue Ribbon School.

“This award was based on overall student performance, particularly in comparison to schools with similar demographics across Indiana,” Dr. White says. “It is a testament to the effectiveness of our collaborative learning approach and our commitment to student success.”

The district has also been recognized as a Model Professional Learning Community School System, with New Prairie Middle School receiving individual accolades. “Our schools are striving towards this designation, and we are proud of our progress,” Dr. White notes.

Addressing teacher shortages

Amid a national teacher shortage, New Prairie United School Corporation has developed a robust hiring and onboarding process to attract and retain educators who align with its mission. “It starts with the interview process,” Dr. White explains. We prioritize candidates who are collaborative thinkers and value honest, direct communication.”

Once hired, new teachers undergo comprehensive onboarding, including attendance at a professional learning community conference in Chicago before the school year begins. “This helps new staff understand our approach to education,” Dr. White says. “We also provide mentorship and quarterly training sessions to ensure a smooth transition.”

Career readiness and real-world experience

In addition to strong educational outcomes, the district prioritizes career readiness. “We’ve established the position of Director of College and Career Readiness to focus on building strong partnerships with local businesses,” Dr. White says. “This allows students to participate in internships, hear from guest speakers, and explore career pathways while still in high school.”

One standout initiative is the advanced manufacturing program, which is made possible through grant funding. “We’ve secured state-of-the-art machinery for our high school, giving students hands-on experience in a growing industry,” Dr. White notes. “Students can gain experience operating high-tech equipment such as CNC machines and 3D printers, simulating real-world manufacturing environments. This training provides a direct bridge to employment opportunities upon graduation.”

The district has partnered with major corporations, including Amazon and local automotive manufacturers, to create structured pathways for students interested in high-demand technical careers. “With companies like Amazon and automotive manufacturers expanding in our area, we are working closely with these industries to develop tailored training programs,” Dr. White explains. “Students have access to career fairs, work-based learning experiences, and on-the-job training opportunities, ensuring they are workforce-ready before graduation.”

New Prairie United School Corporation has also expanded its career-focused curriculum, introducing specialized cybersecurity, healthcare, and entrepreneurship courses. “We want to ensure our students have exposure to diverse career paths,” Dr. White says. “Whether they choose to go directly into the workforce, attend technical school, or pursue a four-year degree, we are committed to equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed.”

Interactive classroom learning

The district has long recognized the importance of integrating technology into the classroom. “We have been a one-to-one district since 2012,” Dr. White says. “Our students use iPads, which provide flexibility and enhance collaborative learning. These devices enable students to access many online resources, participate in interactive lessons, and engage with digital tools that make learning more dynamic. Teachers can tailor instruction to individual student needs, using technology to support differentiated learning and accommodate various learning styles.”

The investment in technology extends beyond devices. “Our high school features collaborative learning spaces where students can use their technology to engage in hands-on projects,” Dr. White says. “These spaces are designed to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and real-world applications of technology. Students work on group projects using interactive whiteboards, 3D modeling software, and cloud-based collaboration tools, preparing them for the technological demands of higher education and the workforce. We believe that when used effectively, technology is a powerful tool for deeper learning, fostering innovation and creativity in our students.”

Infrastructure investments

The district has made significant investments in infrastructure to enhance student learning. “We have renovated all of our elementary classrooms, modernized our high school, and added new fine arts and athletic facilities,” Dr. White says. “Our goal is to ensure students have access to the best learning environments possible, fostering academic and extracurricular development. Modernizing our high school has allowed us to integrate innovative learning spaces that support collaborative and project-based education. Our fine arts expansion includes upgraded music rooms, visual arts studios, and performance spaces, providing students with enhanced opportunities to explore their creative potential.”

Phil King, Board President of New Prairie School Board, highlights the district’s commitment to physical well-being. “We have an award-winning weight room that supports athletes and students interested in personal fitness,” he says. “Beyond athletic training, this facility educates students on overall health, wellness, and injury prevention. Our approach extends to upgraded outdoor sports facilities and expanded gymnasiums, ensuring that all students—whether in organized sports or individual fitness programs—can benefit from our investment. By fostering a culture that values physical well-being, we are helping students develop lifelong healthy habits and leadership skills through athletics and personal fitness programs.”

Priorities for the next 18 months

As the district moves forward, its leadership remains committed to continuous improvement. “We have received multiple national awards, but we don’t see these as a stopping point—they motivate us to get even better,” Dr. White says. “Our goal is to have each of our five school buildings recognized as Model Professional Learning Community Schools, and once we achieve that, we want to share our expertise with other districts.”

The district also plans to expand career pathways, strengthen business partnerships, and improve infrastructure. “Education is constantly evolving,” Dr. White says. “Our responsibility is to ensure that students graduate prepared for whatever path they choose, whether college or a career.”

Leadership reflections

Reflecting on his career, Dr. White shares advice that has guided his leadership. “I was told early in life that you get out of a situation what you put into it,” he says. “That mindset has shaped my approach to education and leadership. If we put our full effort into improving our schools, we will see the results in our students’ success.”

As New Prairie United School Corporation continues its journey, one thing is clear: its dedication to continuous improvement and student-centered learning will ensure a bright future for all its students.
