Burnout is defined by the World Health Organization as an ‘occupational phenomenon’ resulting from chronic workplace stress. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy. To deal with burnout, millions of American employees are taking to the quiet quitting trend: sticking to the bare minimum requirements of their job description and rejecting the notion of going above and beyond at work.
