The year was 1926, and Germany was added to the League of Nations; Kodak produced the first 16mm movie film; escape artist Harry Houdini died, and Gene Tunney won the world heavyweight boxing championship from Jack Dempsey. Meanwhile, closer to home, a 19-year-old L. A. Fuller arrived in Amarillo to work on the railroad. By the 1940s, Fuller felt he had learned a trade from which he could launch his own business and the early beginnings of Fuller and Sons were formed. From two employees and a small bedroom turned into an office in east Amarillo, the eighty-plus-year-old company, with a staff of over two hundred people, serves the entire Panhandle region by providing the infrastructure to sustain its growth. The simple dirt-moving projects L. A. Fuller performed in the 1940s have expanded into a firm capable of moving mass volumes of dirt, paving miles of roadway for TXDOT, installing all underground utilities, and having a complete concrete division that installs anything from sidewalks to bridge replacement. Notable projects in the last three years include the Amazon facility in Amarillo, the Leprino cheese plant in Lubbock, Lake Meredith paving, and Buc-ee’s of Amarillo.
