Despite any challenges that may have come into play including any safety or efficiency concerns, this unique industry has grown substantially over the last few decades. The proof is in the numbers. Today, there are 436 nuclear reactors in operation in 32 countries with a combined capacity of about 390 gigawatts. There are 92 commercial reactors in the U.S. at 54 plants, and 19 in Canada at six. The world’s largest plant is the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario, on the banks of Lake Huron. Globally, around 10% of the world’s electricity comes from nuclear; in Canada, that number is a little over 12%; but in Ontario, nuclear energy produces about 60% of the province’s electricity.
