And there are a bunch of exciting projects on tap throughout the municipality. North Cowichan Mayor, Al Siebring, reports, “We’ve been approved for a new $600 million hospital to replace one that was built in 1967. We’ve also been approved for an $82 million high school to replace one that was built in 1949. We’re also building a new $40 million RCMP station to replace one that was built in the mid-1960s. And Rowing Canada has just chosen us as their new national training headquarters for both the men’s and women’s team after the Tokyo Olympics are done. So we have lots going on.” Historically, North Cowichan was a forest- dependent community and that sector is still a major employer, along with the school district which is the largest single employer in the area, and agriculture also plays a significant role.
