119 BUSINESS VIEW MAGAZINE VOLUME 10, ISSUE 6 NEW YORK STATE CREDI T UNION ASSOCIAT ION The Association understands it is involved in a movement to help the people who use credit union services and also to educate CEOs, boards of directors, as well as credit union employees in New York State about the good of these institutions. So, on the home front, the Association continually ensures that they remind credit unions of their philosophy. “One of our missions is reminding employees of credit unions that they are no longer working a nine-to-five job. They’re actually coming in every day to help a credit union carry out its mission, helping consumers live a better life. And we believe in this philosophy,” says Mellin. Also, the Association facilitates its members’ education on new rules, such as overdraft fees, bankruptcy, and foreclosure laws. One service that the Association offers to its members is shared branching operations, where they can share connections. An example of this is Owner’s Choice Funding, which is a large mortgage company that allows credit unions to offer competitive and affordable mortgages. Owner’s Choice Funding is also member owned and operates in 16 states as far as licensing is concerned. Another part of the shared branching operations service is it allows Association members to join and network amongst themselves. This permits members from different credit unions to conduct financial transactions together in networked outlets across state lines. An additional primary collaborator of the Association is the Credit United National Association (CUNA) Mutual Group. The leading service that the CUNA Mutual Group brings to the table is insurance policies for credit unions. Legal matters are handled by the ALLOYA Corporate Federal Credit Union, which The New York credit union community, representing credit unions across the state, along with New York Credit Union Association partners, came together to support Capitol Build Day 2022 — a Habitat for Humanity of New York State initiative in which credit unions of New York state were recognized as the top-tier sponsor, and sent the highest number of volunteers.
