Three words with the power to literally change lives – depending on which way the scales tip. Too many hours at work can bring on stress, a decrease in productivity, lack of sleep, and a lowering of the immune system. And that’s not a good outcome, especially in these times of COVID-19, when it’s more important than ever to stay healthy and well rested. You’d think it would be easier for those of us now working from home, given that the time and energy and cost of commuting has all but disappeared. But it’s also become more difficult to draw the line between when the work day begins and ends. Often, we just keep at it, or going back to it at all hours, simply because we’re there – always at the job site. So what’s the answer? Perhaps, take a cue from the kids. We put limits on their screen time for a reason. If we just put down the phone, ignore the inbox for awhile, and close the office door (from the outside)… guess what? There’s a whole world out there. Grab a short walk or a long hike in the fresh air, recharge the brain cells with a 20 minute workout, meditate, have a good belly laugh. Read. A. Book. The world at large, and our corner of it, is an intensely serious place that requires 100 percent of our focus – just not 100 percent of the time. As it turns out, discipline is not just a job requisite; it’s a play requisite, too. So take this as permission granted to get out of your chair, out of the workspace, and go find a bit of balance. Mindfulness. It’s a good thing. That being said, given that Business View is a digital publication, I have to say that reading our magazine is a great online choice for de-stressing. This month’s BV North America issue is especially engaging with a significant focus on the home building sector which has been super active during the pandemic. And custom home renovations are leading the construction activities with not just one, but two, home offices being high on the homeowners’ must-have list. In Aviation, regional airports across the U.S. have capitalized on the shutdown time to do vital upgrades and, in some cases, expansions of runways and facilities. From Nebraska’s Thomas County Airport to Wisconsin’s Wausau Downtown Airport, to Fresno Yosemite International, all is looking bright for the future. Meantime, in the “Big Easy”, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is eager to welcome the safe return of events. And South Carolina’s outstanding Benedict College awaits the safe return of students to onsite learning. Our February BV Civil & Municipal edition features a candid conversation with FDOT Secretary Thibeault on smart forward-thinking initiatives being implemented to highway and rail infrastructure to ensure the safety of Florida’s residents and visitors. Then we take you on a great virtual road trip to Lemont, Illinois; Amesbury, Massachusetts; Shelbyville, Indiana; Taylor, Texas; Rutland, Vermont; and Cape May County, New Jersey – six innovative communities where you’ll discover a myriad of ways to find that perfect work / life balance. Be well and enjoy the day, my friends!
