DAVE REYNOLDS, BOUDREAU PIPELINE In 1995, Ray Orgill and his basketball teammate, Rob Yardley, decided to start a full-service fire protection and water works business together. The new business would be funded by Rob’s father, basketball Hall of Famer George Yardley. George Yardley had a long and successful career as an NBA player and as a busi- ness owner – he played for Stanford University in Cal- ifornia while he pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was an All-American as well and went on to play for the Detroit Pistons after college. He was a six-time NBA All-Star and the first player to score 2,000 points in a single season. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 1996. When his son Rob and his partner Ray began Yo-Fire 22 years ago, the most obvious name choice was the Yardley-Orgill Company. However, the problem was no one might remember such a long name. Yard- ley-Orgill became YO-Fire and the rest is history. As the founder of YO-Fire, Yardley’s philosophy, which he installed into his compa- ny and employees, was “the value of customer service always comes before money. It’s always about people helping people.” George fought a tough battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, giving talks and volunteering for others challenged by the disease. George Yardley Nov. 3, 1928-Aug. 12, 2004 fell apart, out here. All the workers are gone and have found other jobs and haven’t come back into the industry. So, one thing that we started the beginning of this year is a training program to get people that are new to the industry and get them trained. We recently purchased an excavator simu- lator to train operators on how to dig ditches, which is our core business. We hired a full-time trainer to develop the program in-house and in the field, with hands-on training. “I’m part of the Building IndustryAssociation of Southern California and we’ve got a task force, this year, to put some emphasis on that. Everyone touts education and college, and it seems like all the trade schools are going to the wayside, so we’re trying to bring new kids in and build up the industry. They formed a building industry technology acad- emy, which is a four-year program for high school students to teach the construction trades. We’ve been working with them to bring high school stu- dents in to see what we do; to learn our trade and bring new people into these good paying positions and careers. That’s what our big focus has been, this year.” Meanwhile, Boudreau reports that the company is also looking to expand.“This coming year,we’re probably going to open another office in the L.A./ Ventura area and possibly in northern California,” he says.“And we just started a division that’s taking care of the mobile home park industry, as far as up- grading all the infrastructure in mobile home parks; there are a lot of dilapidated ones around, so we’re attacking that. We’ve got a real talented executive team, so we’ve also been looking in the Dallas area.
