88 89 Oregon, Ohio T he ambitious City of Ore- gon is part of the Toledo Metropolitan area of north- western Ohio, and is Lucas County’s largest suburb, at 28.5 square miles. It has five miles of shoreline along Maumee Bay/Lake Erie, and port facilities that service foreign and domestic cargo for shipment in the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. The Port of Toledo began opera- tions on the south bank of the Maumee River in the early 1800s and developed port operations on Maumee Bay in 1955. These operations continue in the north- west area of Oregon, today. Lindsay Myers is Executive Director of the Oregon Economic Development Foundation– a public/private partner- ship that executes the marketing and economic development strategies for the city. They are governed by a separate ex- ecutive board; 60 percent funded by the city, with the other 40 percent acquired by fundraising.
