LOGANSPORT, INDIANA A former transportation hub Located midway between Chicago and Indianapolis, Logansport was first settled around 1826 and was named for a half-Shawnee soldier named James Renick-Logan, better known as “Captain Logan,” who served as a scout for U.S. forces in the surrounding area during the War of 1812. The Michigan Road, one of the earliest roads in Indiana, built in the 1830s and ‘40s, ran through Logansport, as did the Wabash and Erie Canal, which reached Logansport in 1837, contributing the “port” to the town’s name, as in “Logan’s port.” By the late 1850s, the railroad had come to town, answering the growing need for faster and more reliable transportation options than those offered by wagon and water. By 1901, 216 trains were moving through the city on a daily basis, and Logansport was becoming the biggest train hub in the state with railroads extending out of the city in nine directions.
