Formed by royal charter in 1767 and incorporated as one of the state’s initial 104 townships, Woolwich gave shelter to the passengers of the first English ship to dock on Raccoon Creek, whose banks were foundation for the first European settlement by Swedes and Fins, now known as Swedesboro. These newcomers tended stock and raised grain, fruits, and vegetables – developing farmland which is today some of New Jersey’s richest and most productive.
