More than a decade ago, Andover Regional School District in Newton NJ was seeking to reduce electricity expenses and environmental impacts, but was hesitant to cover the upfront cost to purchase and install solar despite rising electricity prices. The district found a solution through a solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with SunVest, which financed, installed, and now operates solar installations at Burd Elementary and Long Pond Middle School. Under the PPA model, Andover had no capital investment whatsoever and instead buys the electricity generated by the panels at a fixed, discounted rate from utility prices. “Over the past 12 years, the solar projects have saved the district significantly,” said John Fritzky, Superintendent of Andover Schools. “That’s money we’ve been able to redirect toward educational priorities.” SunVest officials say that focusing on clear financial outcomes is central to their work with public schools. “I always try to explain the savings first,” said Ian McCarter, Director of Origination at SunVest. “Once districts understand how the economics work, the technical details become secondary.” McCarter also noted that generating electricity onsite allows Andover to rely far less on fossil-fuel-based power and significantly increase the share of emission-free electricity used across district buildings. Additionally, solar installations can support classroom learning. On-site solar also facilitates teaching physics, engineering or technology, helping students connect the abstract to real-world concepts SunVest’s portfolio includes projects for K–12 schools, universities and community colleges nationwide, each structured to provide predictable energy savings. “Every project starts with listening and running the numbers,” McCarter said. “If an organization wants to explore whether solar makes sense, we encourage them to reach out for more information.” “Over the past 12 years, these solar projects have saved the district significantly” Solar Without Sticker Shock: How Andover Schools Lowered Energy Bills with Solar www.SunVest.com -John Fritzky, Superintendent
