70 CIVIL AND MUNICIPAL VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2 istory buffs will recall that when San Jose was established for Spanish missionaries in the late 18th century, it was planned specifically to serve as a major food supply point for the central coast area of Alta California. It may seem odd today, since the area has long been known as an orchard region, providing fertile soil to the silicon transistor and umpteen scalable startups, but the importance of the Santa Clara Valley’s legacy as an agricultural powerhouse can’t be overstated for the simple fact that farming is so much at the root of community and security. Certainly, it’s a metaphor that paints the picture (as good as any) that nurturing begets abundance, which begets the confidence to realize the limits of potential. H
