Civil Municipal - December 2024

In 1998 U.S. Congress officially designated Bristol the “Birthplace of Country Music” due to the lasting impact of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, the event in history often referred to as the “big bang of country music.”Those legendary Sessions, recorded with state-of-the-art technology, included the first recordings of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and catapulted the genre into the mainstream. The nonprofit Birthplace of Country Music (BCM) is the keeper of that great history, and engages audiences world-wide through its work at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival, and WBCM Radio Bristol. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, explores the 1927 Bristol Sessions through multiple theater experiences, interactive exhibits, and a variety of concerts, educational programs, community events and special exhibits. Radio Bristol broadcasts and streams live from the museum daily. Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, celebrating 24 years Sept. 19-21, 2025, is held along several blocks of State Street in the twin cities’ downtown and demonstrates the far-reaching influence of the region’s music legacy on the soundtrack of our lives across a wide range of genres.
