U .S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota opened in 2016 on the former site of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, which had been the home of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings from 1982 to 2013, the MLB’s Minnesota Twins from 1982 to 2009, and the Minnesota Timberwolves in their 1989–90 inaugural season. The new, $1-plus billion facility, owned by the State of Minnesota, and operated by SMG, the worldwide venue management group, has a lightweight translucent roof made up of 60 percent Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), a fluorine-based clear plastic, and is the largest in North America, spanning 240,000 square feet. Its slanted design, inspired by Nordic vernacular architecture, allows the stadium to endure the region’s heavy snow loads, while providing fans a view of downtown Minneapolis.
