8 CIVIL AND MUNICIPAL VOLUME 3, ISSUE 10 Habitat for Humanity – the name and the organization epitomizes the act of helping and caring for people. At Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity, we are dedicated to our mission of providing affordable housing in the Southeast Volusia County communities of New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, and Oak Hill. We are a not-for-profit and faith-based agency that exists to improve the lives of the families we serve by providing homes. Our family partners purchase the homes and we are very fortunate to have great relationships with the municipalities we serve. For example, all three towns have granted land to our affiliate, which helps to lower the construction costs. We receive down payment assistance from Volusia County and that too enables us to become more affordable. We are able to be successful through the generosity of members of our community. We fund our builds through the philanthropic donations to our ReStore, which are then sold to generate resources to build homes. Our ReStore has been recognized as the top thrift store in Southeast Volusia County for the past two consecutive years by the readers of the Home Town News. Also, this year our affiliate was rated as the top not-for-profit by the same viewers. We are proud of the recognition but most pleased with our ability to provide the house keys to our deserving families during the home dedication. We build a house and our family partners make it their home. Our most recent home dedication was on September 15, 2022. The family completed hundreds of sweat equity hours working in our ReStore and actually building their own home. We are so proud of Habitat for Humanity for being an integral part of the fabric of our community. In a fantastic show of support, over 50 members of our area showed up to provide well wishes to the family. Our affiliate has existed for 28 years. During this time, we have built and delivered 148 homes. We are in the process of launching builds 149 and 150. Visitors are always welcome to come out and witness firsthand the collaborative spirit with which Habitat for Humanity works with our volunteer labor force. Rewarding times for one and all. ......
