And of course there were the railroads and the shipping
lanes. With the opening of the first canal at Sault St.
Marie in 1855, Duluth became the only American port
with access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. By
the start of the 20th century, Duluth passed New York
City and Chicago in gross tonnage handled, making it
the leading port in the United States. Lake freighters
carried iron ore from the Mesabi Range through the
Great Lakes and on to processing plants in Illinois and
Ohio.
