Faulker Perrin Homes
FAULKNER PERRIN CUSTOM HOMES alized that that was not what I wanted to do because I didn’t have his aptitude for building. So,I went the sales andmarketing route andwent to Baylor Univer- sityand then to SMU for myMBA. “Backwhenwewere in our teens,we dreamed somedaywewould start our own company, sowe could run it in theway that wewanted to.I have been a resident of UniversityParkand PrestonHollowsince I got out of college and Kirkhas built all over themetro- plex since 1990–some 28 years. Fast forward from the early‘80s to 2012whenwe decided to form the companyand fill the niche that I sawin the Preston Hollowand ParkCities area for a customhome builder who combined both the trained technical ability to build high-end customhomes, but also had a person- al side to the business, which included beingmore involved in clients’lives,post-construction.This formula has served us and our clients extremelywell as our rise has been quite rapid in the last four years.” BVM: What was the planwhen you first began oper- ations? Faulkner: “Themaster marketing planwas to do sev- eral spechouses in different genres and to go ahead and complete those houses (aka don’t sell themearly) so the general public could come and see the finished workbeforewe started doing custom jobs for individu- al families. In contrast to builders whowere just doing themiddle-of-the-road,traditional style homes,we went a little further out of the box. “We startedwith aModern Farmhouse, then a Santa Barbara; a CaliforniaMediterranean; a Hill Country Contemporary; then a Cape Cod; a SophisticatedMod- ern,aModernTudor; thenwe did a reallymodern-con- temporaryhome. After we developed and sold our spechouses,we then turned and started doing custom jobs for customers who noware coming to us.We were heavily specbydesign and nowwe’re 90 percent customand 10 percent spechomes.Of the next 10 houses, nine are customand onlyone is spec.” BVM: Do you buyyour own lots? Faulkner: “Yes we buyour own lots. But some fami- lies purchase their own lots andwe are happy to build on their lot or ours.” BVM: Do you also have design services? Faulkner: “We do not.For the veryhigh-end custom homes that we build, the verybest architectural and designwork is required andwe feel this is done best byoutside firms. We onlyworkwith award-winning designers who have both the experience and the staff to handle a home like ours. Same for architects—while weworkwith different firms, earlyonwe partnered withDavid Stocker of shmarchitects,as he allowed us to create distinctlycustomdesigned homes on every project, which is exactlywhat wewanted in our initial portfolio. Of course,we are happy toworkwith any architect or designer a couple is engagedwith,we just didn’t want to be a design/build firmas we don’t feel
