McCormick Air Center exists because of one plane. In 1981, Rob McCormick with a fascination of flying boats, purchased one that was headed for the junkyard. For 15 years it was moved about the state in hopes of getting it to flying status. Wanting a proper place to restore it, in 1996 Rob built his own hangar at the Yakima airport. The building of that hangar was fortuitous, as he immediately had inquiries for leasing it, which he did, and his much beloved, but still unflyable plane was displaced. Realizing YKM needed hangars, Rob began turning the cow pasture west of what was Cascade Airways’ hangar into hangars. Beginning with t-hangars in 1998, adding larger hangars, maintenance, fuel and flight instruction by 2003, the basis for McCormick Air Center was set. Today we are the home to many aircraft including those of Airlift Northwest and Dept of Natural Resources. After 40 years without having her own home, Rob’s flying boat found her forever home when the t-hangars on west-end of airport were completed. Grumman Widgeon N67646, (restoration complete in 2013) can be viewed next to our Flight Instruction display on the west edge of Aviation Day. Rob has plans for more hangars in 2026.
