Looking Glass Community Services performs work that is nationally accredited, and state licensed. Our services for youth and families include alternative education, residential treatment, homeless youth and outpatient mental health and addictions treatment. All Looking Glass services are integrated to support one another. Youth who enroll at Looking Glass Community Services’ Riverfront School & Career Center (an accredited alternative school located in Eugene, Oregon) often come to the school after having experienced a series of challenges at prior schools. Some have experienced homelessness. Some have experienced trauma or abuse. Many were never expected to graduate high school and, for the almost 70% of them who do graduate, some are also the first in their families to do so. The environment students are surrounded by at Riverfront includes mental health and addictions support, life skills training and workforce development opportunities. One recent graduate, Emily, whose father has been in prison most of her life and whose mother actively discouraged her from completing her education, had to find the motivation to complete school outside the home. Emily credited the teachers at Riverfront for helping her to find that motivation and eventually excel. “THE TEACHERS ARE AMAZING,” EMILY EXPLAINED AFTER GRADUATING IN 2023. “THEY ARE SO GENUINE AND KIND AND PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE SUPPORT.” In addition to offering high school education in a small environment with trauma-informed educators and mental health therapists regularly engaging with the youth, Riverfront provides paths to finding careers in the skilled trades program, which recently completed construction on a tiny home for another local nonprofit in the Eugene area. Riverfront offers job training and interview skills and job placement opportunities throughout the community. Riverfront gives opportunities to our most vulnerable youth and plays a major role in the community to ensure even those youth who have struggled in the past can have the chance to succeed in their future. Looking Glass is in the process of attempting to purchase the building that houses this school, which would ensure stability for this crucial program into the future. Potential donors looking to invest in the future workforce and particularly those seeking to invest in youth in need of a second chance could make a major impact by donating to our capital campaign.
