“Most of the feedback we receive from our residents is about what’s needed in our town center… they want things that are family-focused,” Lee states. As Wildwood updates its master plan in alignment with its 30th anniversary, the emphasis remains on fostering a downtown that balances walkability, beautification, and community-focused commercial growth. We’ve shaped our strategy to attract businesses that meet those needs—restaurants, entertainment options, and retail, Lee says. Recent additions, such as boutique shops and family-oriented dining establishments, illustrate this community’s commitment to meeting its residents’ evolving needs. The city has responded by welcoming businesses like Bros Fish, Shrimp, and More—a locally owned restaurant—and Mint and Martini, an Indian cuisine establishment. The Local House Bistro, offering American-inspired dishes, has quickly become a community favorite. In addition to dining, the city’s boutique vendors, including a new candle shop and spa materials store, cater to residents seeking unique shopping experiences. Entertainment options, like the local movie theater,YMCA and Pond Athletic Association for baseball and softball, also contribute to Wildwood’s vibrant community life. Wildwood’s location along the historic Route 66 adds another layer of charm and opportunity. Route 66, with its iconic status as “The Mother Road,” draws visitors from across the globe. “We understand the tourism value of Route 66, as it’s home to most of our historical buildings along Manchester Road. Over the years, we’ve worked to enhance that roadway to ensure it remains safe, welcoming, and supportive of the historic route,,” Lee says. The city’s efforts to revitalize this historic corridor reflect its recognition of the road’s significance as a cultural and economic asset. taken a proactive approach to preserving Route 66’s charm. Rather than succumbing to large-scale modernization, the city prioritizes maintaining the area’s architectural character. “We are committed to preserving the unique charm and historical character of the buildings along the corridor. Our efforts ensure that the character of Route 66 remains unchanged, maintaining its timeless appearance for future generations,” Lee states. Because of this decision, Wildwood focuses on supporting small, locally owned businesses within that area while introducing amenities that enhance the visitor experience. “We are also considering this from an economic development standpoint for businesses along Route 66. How can we support their success? As part of these discussions, the City is exploring the possibility of a grant program that could assist businesses and residents along the corridor with repairs, new signage, and similar improvements. While no formal program has been approved, we are actively working to develop a framework for consideration,” says Director of Planning and Parks Joe Vujnich. Future developments along Route 66 promise to further enhance Wildwood’s appeal. Among the most anticipated projects is the transformation of a historic feed supply store into Good News Brewery. This venue, scheduled to open in the summer of 2025, will feature wood-fired pizza ovens, local craft beer, and outdoor activities such as lawn games.The brewery is situated along a popular biking corridor and is expected to become a significant attraction for both residents and visitors. A COMMUNITY BUILT FOR THE FUTURE While celebrating its historic roots, Wildwood also recognizes the importance of modern infrastructure to support both residents and businesses. One transformative project has been expanding high-speed internet access. when federal funding accelerated progress. The City completed the first phase of its broadband initiative in 2024, providing high-speed internet to over 2,000 previously underserved addresses. Through a thorough review process, the City identified 395 remaining underserved addresses in need of high-speed internet access. The City is working tirelessly with the Missouri State Office of Broadband Development and exploring additional opportunities to ensure these homes are connected. This infrastructure enhances property values and attracts remote workers who can enjoy Wildwood’s natural beauty while staying connected to their careers. Stormwater management is another critical focus. Surrounded by two major rivers and nine watersheds, Wildwood faces unique challenges in addressing erosion and infrastructure protection. The city is developing its first comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plan to mitigate these risks. This initiative, set to launch in 2025, will study all nine watersheds, identify priority projects, and pursue federal funding to safeguard public and private infrastructure from extreme weather events. focused on maintaining the city’s unique character and on expanding its residential housing inventory. “Over the last two years, the City has been processing proposals for over 400 new residential units, all within the Town Center—an area specifically designated for this type of development and comprising approximately 2% of the City’s total land mass.These proposals, which include a mix of multifamily units, attached single-family homes, and more traditional detached single-family residences, are intended to enhance the Town Center while ensuring the preservation of the vast open spaces that define the rest of the City,” Vujnich says, speculating that these projects could be completed sometime in 2025 or early 2026. Wildwood’s ability to harmonize growth with preservation sets it apart. Its expansive open spaces, robust trail system, and vibrant town center create a lifestyle that appeals to a diverse range of residents. As the city looks ahead, its commitment to thoughtful planning, community engagement, and sustainable development ensures that the city remains a model of balanced growth. One major project involves reconstructing Manchester and Taylor roadways in the town center area. The work includes enhancements to the road ways with the addition of modern materials, ADA accommodations, and upgraded traffic signals to create a more welcoming and efficient thoroughfare. In addition, the city is collaborating with state and county entities to improve major routes, such as Route 109 and Highway 100. These efforts include adding left-turn lanes, implementing safety features like J-turns, and resurfacing roadways that have not been updated in decades.
