Describing the etching process in layman’s terms, Cohen explains,“First we create a photo tool, which is a clear filmwith the part design printed on it.The metal is cleaned and coated with a UV-sensitive resist before having the photo tools, top and bot- tom, put in place. UV light is shown onto the metal through the photo tool causing the resist to harden where exposed. The softer resist hidden by the print on the photo tool is then washed away leaving exposed metal in the precise part geometry. “This panel of metal is then run through an acid bath and the acid eats away the exposed metal. Nearing the end of the process the UV sensitive re- sist is removed leaving precisely dimensioned parts. The parts are then moved to inspection, using com- puterized measuring devices to make sure the parts are within specifications and tolerance. From here we are able to offer a variety of secondary services, such as plating and forming.” Avery important part of the Fotofab process is its commitment to a delivery time of four days.
