building for organics, where we can package and separate inorganics from organics. The process involves two digesters with a hydrolyzer system to pre-treat the organics, an anaerobic digester, and a pasteurizer. The gas produced will be upgraded to natural gas and injected into the natural gas pipeline. The digestate will be certified as an organic fertilizer for land application, providing nutrients to farm fields instead of ending up in a landfill.” Adghim expresses his eagerness for the project and the ongoing research in collaboration with the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College. “We’re currently researching how to best pre-treat organic wastes like corn stover to optimize their use in the digester. This involves using extrusion to break down the organic material before it enters the digester. Another primary objective of this project is to reduce the size of the digestate and produce clean water that can be safely discharged or reused within the plant.” He further explains the scalability of the technology and its potential applications. “The technology is easily scalable, which is particularly beneficial for large-scale projects like the one in Prescott. While biogas is not a new technology, its scalability and potential for centralized biogas plants make it an attractive option for waste management. However, the permitting process can be a challenge, as we’ve experienced with our project in Prescott.” Allen highlights the benefits of such biogas projects. “Our projects can be deployed in various settings, providing access to electricity and heat for those who may not have access to a reliable electricity grid. Biogas is a constant source of energy, unlike solar or wind, which are dependent on weather conditions.” NAVIGATING THE FUTURE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY The renewable energy sector is at a pivotal moment, with the aging electric grid and the increasing demand for sustainable energy sources driving FOR YOUR A.D.
