“One thing that’s different for us from other cities in
other states is our age,” Summers said. “We’re defi-
nitely a pre-World War II community. Our stuff was
pretty much designed in the late part of the 19th cen-
tury and then built into the early part of the 20th cen-
tury and then used hard.”
“With that type of age, it takes more care and mainte-
nance,” Papke said.
“We have a lot of sewers that were dug by hand. They
have segmented tiles or brick sewers that are starting
to show their age and we have to keep up with them.”
Among the city’s ongoing projects are a $1.5 million
endeavor at Lakewood Park that will create prome-
nades to increase lakefront access and add benches
