The City of Union City provides dependable infrastructure and services with a focus on community. The dedication to fulfill electrical needs began in 1890 when the Water & Light Plant of Union City started its first generator. This generator was a 60 kilowatt generator that ran from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. This unit was replaced with a 250 kilowatt unit in 1900. Union City continued to grow and the capacity of generation increased to 500 kilowatts in 1916, 2,000 kilowatt in 1939 and an additional 2,500 kilowatts was added in 1948. In 1950, Union City’s load growth outgrew the peak performance of its self-owned generation. The next approach of fulfilling the appetite for electricity was to join the growing TVA service in the Valley. In 1952, Union City Electric System was established as a separate but connected Power Board through the city. The consumption of the city at the time was 3% of consumption that we see to date.Throughout the years, lines were built, substations were added, technology advanced and the focus of providing a dependable service continued. In 2017, Union City Electric System became Union City Energy Authority. This pivotal moment sparked the beginning of an additional service that benefits residents and businesses. The Authority built out a fiber network that was completed in 2023. The history of Union City’s Electrical Service all started with a 60 kilowatt generator and has grown to 6 substations and a fiber network that was built with community at its focus. www.unioncityenergy.com Union City Energy Authority serves around 6500 electric and a growing number of ber optic internet customers, in many ways, are on the cutting edge of technology, which allows us to supply our customers with reasonably priced, reliable electric power.
