Officially incorporated in 1882, the city was named after Sir Walter Scott’s Scottish novel, A Legend of Montrose. The area predates this period, as prehistoric rock art was discovered dating back to 1000 BC. Known as the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site, this part of Montrose is now listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties.
